In ancient China silk of the light blue color was very precious. It was used only for making rich garments. A beautiful woman’s hair was compared to light-blue silk. The famous poet of the Tang Dynasty Bai Juyi noticed the pitiful fact that women also lost hair and described it in the following line:
“Fell the silk of light blue and sparse grew the temples.”
The situation deplored by the renowned Tang Dynasty poet has become more serious in the contemporary world. But there is no need for female to get into a panic if she finds a few hairs on her pillow in the morning. It is normal for a person, whether male or female, to lose 50-100 pieces of hair during the 24 hours of a day, because he/she is supposed to have one hundred thousand pieces of hair on his/her scalp. If the person washes his/her head and finds a lot of hair in the water, then the situation is more serious. It is highly probable that he/she is losing hair. It is certain that a woman will feel greatly alarmed or even become ashamed of herself if she should discover that her scalp is barely covered by a thin layer of hair. This is a natural reaction, because her beauty is impaired. Now, what are the causes of hair loss in the case of females? An obvious cause is some chronic skin disease. It must not be overlooked that ringworm may bring about alopecia with scaling and pustulation. This is far more serious than alopecia which is due to other diseases, such as anemia, so far as the possibility of regrowth of hair is concerned.
Hair loss, whatever the cause may be, is connected with the atrophy and degeneration of hair follicles. Atrophied and degenerated hair follicles cannot take part in the life cycle of the organism, have no means to absorb nourishment from the surrounding scalp, and as a natural result cannot support the growth of hair. Therefore, the key to the treatment of hair loss is trying to find a way to enable the hair follicles to function properly again. The so-called atrophy and degeneration
of hair follicles are shown in no other than the decrease in speed or the complete stop of multiplication of the hair follicles cells (chiefly the cells of the outer root sheath, ORS), resulting in the deterioration of the growth environment within each follicle, which suppresses the division of the hair parent cells and makes it impossible for hair to be produced, thereby placing the hair follicles in a state of inactivity, which makes them grow weaker and weaker and die out at last.
The female pattern alopecia is generally considered to be caused by hereditary factors and, therefore, not amenable to treatment. It is asserted, however, that any female who is afflicted by this type of alopecia need not feel despair, for this type of premature loss of hair affects, in women, only the crown and can be successfully concealed with the help of a wig. This conclusion, in our opinion, does not carry conviction. For there is no proof that any disease which is due to a hereditary factor can never be cured by some newly invented means. Besides, it is irrelevant whether the defect is one that can be concealed from the public or not.
Some people are of the opinion that female hair loss is due to some endocrine disorder. In this connection, the female sex hormones come into the center of attention. However, a woman must be cautious about meddling with any of her estrogens. For she would run the risk of getting carcinoma if she should do that. There is another opinion which is also difficult to comply with. Some people say that a female may use her brain too strenuously, thus concentrating the blood of the upper part of her head in the brain and decreasing correspondingly the blood in her scalp. Such an uneven state of blood distribution will in the long run cause the hair to fall off because the hair follicles are short of nourishment. The implication of this opinion is quite obvious. A woman should not be an intellectual worker. No self-respecting female will agree with this idea.
