** HOW IT WORKS **
The system works with 4 AAA batteries, which last for about 24hrs of playing time. I however use the AC adapter provided in the box with this portable sound system. To turn the unit on you have to push down quite hard on the bass booster in the middle of the unit. Once you’ve done this the middle section of the unit pops up in smooth relaxed action. To turn it off just push the bass booster down.
** SOUND **
The sound quality that comes from speakers of this size is amazing and the sound can be increased to quite a high volume. A lot of portable low priced speakers have a tinny sound to them, but this one produces a meaty bass performance, due to it’s EAVS (Expanded Air Volume System) technology, which is a chamber in the unit that expands to increase available air volume, resulting in an outstanding sound system that is very portable. They may be using fancy words but it works.
** LOOKS **
A stylish looking speaker system with curves, that has 2 speakers built into the unit on top and a subwoofer built underneath. When the device is switched on the middle section of the unit pops up in smooth relaxed action. You also get a protective travel-case so that you can carry the sound system around with you. The A-200 has integrated on/off volume controls, which are 2 small silver buttons on top of the unit.
The unit weighs 1.7lb without batteries and its dimensions are 5in. x 13.5in. x 1.9in. which makes it small and lightweight.
** COMPATIBILITY **
The A-200 connects to all portable media players (MP3, CD, DVD, MPEG4, Sony PSP) and your PC or laptops via the 3.5mm jack audio cable, which is provided in the box.
** PACKAGING **
The Saitek A-200 comes in a small stylish rigid black cardboard box. It has images of the speaker system on it from all angles. Inside, the A-200 is protected by egg carton type packaging, so there is very little chance of it being damaged. Inside the packaging comes a CD type holder. In that you get a user guide and a technical support guide. The user guide is quite colourful and has languages from English, France, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish. The guide covers batteries, connecting the speaker system, operating the EAVS system, controlling music, the AC adapter, trouble shooting and technical information. The technical document has information on the battery and AC adapter and conditions of your warranty, which is 2 years from the date of purchase, now that’s not bad.
Also in the packaging you get a protective cover for the sound system and a nice black screen clean cloth. As the A-200 is quite shiny this cloth comes in quite handy to keep it looking good.
** SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS **
When I brought this sound system I was a bit sceptical about how good the sound that comes out of it would be. Would it sound tinny and would it be noticeable, especially when playing music? Would it be loud enough? I needn’t have worried it produces crisp clear sounds and I can’t say a bad thing about it. The fact that it’s small means I can carry it with me and when used at home it’s so stylish that it’s a talking point when people see it. It has very nice bass sounds and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a portable sound system. The A-200 speakers can be turned up really high and there isn’t any crackling or distortion.
It stands apart from sound systems in its price range because of its looks and the sound that it produces and it’s compact size. I’ve seen other sound systems twice as expensive that do not produce the solid sounds that the A-200 produces and they are also much bigger.
The Saitek A-200 multimedia speaker system retails for around £70 and it’s worth every penny.
